Bardin Kweku Samson, the father of a young man arrested over an alleged break-in at the New Gbewaa Palace in Yendi, has revealed that his son is mentally unstable.
He has appealed to palace authorities and the people of Yendi to forgive his son for his bad behaviour.
He, however, attributed his son’s behaviour to illicit drug use and called on the general public to help fight the illicit drug menace in society.
“I will continue to appeal to the palace to forgive him because he doesn’t know what he is doing due to the illicit drugs he takes,” he said.
Mr Samson said his son had been involved in illicit drug use, which he believes had contributed to his involvement in criminal activity.
According to him, he had tried to bring him home after he left and began using drugs.
“I will plead with the general public to come together and fight the illicit drug menace in our society. It is destroying the future of our children,” he said.
He thanked the general public for not lynching his son following the alleged theft.
The young man, in his twenties, was arrested after allegedly stealing electrical wiring, cement, and other building materials from a storeroom at the palace.
Eyewitnesses said they heard noises coming from the storeroom and alerted palace leaders, who went to the scene and apprehended the suspect.
They also alleged that he had attempted to break into the apartments of the Ya Naa’s wives before he was caught. The witnesses said the number of items reportedly taken suggested he may have had accomplices.
The suspect has since been handed over to the Yendi Divisional Police Command for further investigations.
