A video circulating on social media appears to show a female student in Akatsi, in Ghana’s Volta Region, drinking what is believed to be an alcoholic beverage from a sachet while reportedly heading to school.
The footage has sparked concerns about student discipline, underage alcohol consumption and the accessibility of alcoholic beverages to young people.
Although the identity of the student and the school she attends have not been independently established, the incident has raised questions about the role of parents, school authorities, alcohol retailers and community leaders in safeguarding students.
The use of sachet packaging for alcoholic beverages has also attracted public health concerns in Ghana because the products can be inexpensive, portable and easy for young people to conceal. In February 2026, the organisation VAST-Ghana called on the government to ban sachet alcohol to help protect children and other vulnerable groups.
The apparent incident in Akatsi highlights the need for greater public awareness of the potential dangers of alcohol consumption among young people and the importance of responsible behaviour among students.
School authorities and relevant stakeholders may need to establish the facts surrounding the footage before taking any action.
As of publication, the student’s identity, the authenticity and date of the video, and whether school authorities have responded remain unconfirmed.
Parents, educators and community leaders are encouraged to prioritise guidance, counselling and education on the risks associated with alcohol consumption, while avoiding the public identification or shaming of a student before the facts are established.
