The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has reported improvements in efforts to combat illegal mining in the Ankobra and Bia river basins, as well as parts of the Tano River and its upper reaches.
The Director of Operations at NAIMOS, Colonel K. S. Appiah, disclosed this during the Secretariat’s Progress Series, where he highlighted developments in the ongoing fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
He said although the situation had improved in the areas identified, more work was needed to address illegal mining activities in the Birim River basin.
Colonel Appiah stressed the need for sustained enforcement and strategic interventions to consolidate the gains made and protect the country’s water bodies from the devastating effects of illegal mining.
Illegal mining remains a major environmental concern in Ghana, particularly because of its impact on water quality and the degradation of natural resources.
The latest assessment by NAIMOS highlights progress in some river basins while pointing to the need for intensified operations in areas where illegal mining continues to threaten water resources and the environment.
The Secretariat says it remains committed to strengthening its operations to curb illegal mining and safeguard Ghana’s natural resources.
