The recently published exposé by investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni, has uncovered further details surrounding allegations of sexual misconduct against the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), Zakaria Abdulai, including an account by the school’s housemistress and the intervention of the Obuasi East Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), William Kofi Adjaho, popularly known as Biggy.

According to Manasseh, who led the investigation, allegations against Abdulai began emerging within a month of his appointment in April 2025.

A secret audio recording intercepted during the investigation reportedly captured the housemistress, Stephanie Adjoa Yeboah, recounting an incident in which the MCE went to the school after 10 pm to take a female student away following an allegation of sexual assault against the headmaster.

The account, alongside the MCE’s explanation of his intervention, raises questions about how the initial allegations were handled and why the matter was not reported to the police.

    Housemistress recounts late-night intervention

In the account cited by Manasseh, Yeboah explained how she became involved in the late-night incident after receiving instructions from the MCE.

“Biggy told me that after leaving the headmaster’s place, I should go to the main block and call a certain girl named … to come out and wait,” she reportedly said.

She said she followed the instruction and informed the student that the MCE and her father wanted her to wait at the designated location.

“I did as he said. I went to tell the girl that ‘Biggie and your father’ say you should wait for them here. As some of us came out, they also arrived in a car,” she recounted.

Yeboah said she initially resisted the MCE’s decision to take the student away because she wanted to know the reason for the action.

“Biggy said he was taking the girl away and I said I would not allow it until I knew the reason. And that was when he said the girl complained about ‘sexual conduct’ and they are taking her home to listen to the matter properly,” she said.

According to the account, the MCE eventually left the school with the student and her family members.

Headmaster did not respond to allegations, housemistress claims

Yeboah also recounted how she confronted Abdulai after the student had been taken away.

She said the headmaster later encountered her and another colleague, identified as Kafui, while they were discussing the incident.

“When they left, the headmaster came out as Kafui and I were in the room gossiping about the matter… he asked me what was happening and I told him directly, ‘One of the girls said you have slept with her and another said you sexually assaulted her and she is now home’,” she said.

The housemistress said she was direct in informing the headmaster about the allegations.

“I didn’t mince words. He didn’t comment… He looked at me quietly and asked how the girls were. I mentioned their names and he told me to give him my number,” she recounted.

The account does not establish why the headmaster allegedly remained silent or what subsequent communication, if any, took place between him and the housemistress.

    What the MCE told Manasseh

In his narration, Manasseh said he contacted the Obuasi East MCE to establish his involvement in the incident.

According to the journalist, Adjaho confirmed that he went to the school at night with a relative of the student to take her away.

However, he denied resolving the matter with the family.

Manasseh said the MCE explained that he had heard the girl’s father was furious and intended to mobilise the youth to attack the headmaster.

The MCE reportedly said he intervened because of his position as a party member – a member of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Manasseh said he also asked Adjaho whether he knew the allegation constituted a criminal matter that should have been reported to the police.

According to the journalist, the MCE acknowledged that it was a criminal matter.

He further reportedly told Manasseh that, at a meeting at Kofkans, Yeboah had indicated that the alleged sexual assault was not the first incident involving the headmaster.

Despite this, the matter was not reported to the police because those involved allegedly believed they did not have sufficient evidence to do so.
