The Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights has condemned allegations of sexual abuse at Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS).

In a statement issued on Thursday, October 15, 2026, and signed by its Chairman, Kumawu MP Ernest Yaw Anim, the Committee described the alleged conduct as a violation of children’s rights.

It cited Sections 2 and 13 of the Children’s Act, 1998, and Article 34 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), which provides for the protection of children against sexual abuse and exploitation.

The Committee commended the Minister of Education and the Ghana Education Service for the swift interdiction and suspension of the school’s headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai, alongside another housemaster, as well as the initiation of a police investigation into the matter.

It urged school authorities, management and both teaching and non-teaching staff across the country to uphold the highest standards of professional and ethical conduct.

“The Committee urges School Authorities, Management, teaching and non-teaching Staff in second cycle and other educational institutions across the country to exercise the highest forms of ethical, moral and professional conduct,” the statement said.

The Committee also appealed to the justice system to expedite the prosecution of the case and ensure that appropriate punishment is imposed if the accused is found guilty.

It said a firm response would serve as a deterrent to potential offenders and help prevent similar incidents in educational institutions.

“The Committee further appeals to the justice system to fast-track the prosecution of this issue and apply the maximum sentence, once the Head teacher is found guilty,” it stated.

The Committee said it would continue to monitor the investigation and prosecution in line with its oversight responsibilities. It also called for policy reviews to strengthen safeguards for children in schools and other educational institutions, stressing the need to protect students’ rights as they pursue their education.
