Investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni, has called on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to release receipts for the hiring of private jets used in the evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa.

In a post shared on October 28, 2026, Manasseh said the receipts for the jet rentals had not been made public, although documents covering expenditure on commercial flights had been released.

The journalist said his attention was drawn to the outstanding receipts following an earlier post he had made on the evacuation expenditure.

According to Manasseh, a source told him that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Presidency and National Security coordinated the evacuation exercise, with the Ministry releasing information on expenditure it paid for directly and for which it had receipts.

He argued that the cost of hiring private jets was a major expenditure item whose supporting documents should be disclosed, just like the other expenses incurred during the exercise.

“I believe the jet rentals were a major expenditure item whose receipts should be disclosed, like the rest of the expenditures. I sincerely do not think this will compromise national security,” he stated.

Manasseh also revised his earlier assessment of the ministry’s disclosure, saying the release of the expenditure documents was proactive but could not be described as entirely honest while some receipts remained outstanding.

“With some receipts pending, the disclosure of the documents was proactive, but not ‘honest,’ as I stated in my earlier write-up,” he wrote.

    Earlier praise for the Ministry

The latest comments follow an earlier post in which Manasseh praised the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for making documents on the evacuation expenditure public.

However, the journalist has now called for the release of the outstanding jet rental receipts, arguing that the disclosure remains incomplete without them.

He also reiterated his concerns about possible irregularities in the evacuation expenditure, insisting that the issues raised in his earlier analysis should be thoroughly investigated.

As stated in point 12 of his earlier write-up, Manasseh said there could be “actual wrongdoing” or “embezzlement” in the expenditure and called for a comprehensive investigation into the matters flagged.

The evacuation of 1,964 Ghanaians from South Africa has attracted public scrutiny, with opposition lawmakers questioning the reported expenditure of about GH¢49 million and demanding accountability for the funds used.
