The Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE) says its contra-flow traffic management system has significantly reduced travel time for commuters travelling from Adenta, Kasoa and Amasaman into Accra Central, easing the burden of daily traffic congestion on some of the capital’s busiest routes.

GAPTE Managing Director Daouda Awudu said the initiative has produced encouraging results since its introduction, with commuters experiencing shorter journey times during peak traffic periods.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Thursday, October 15, Daouda Awudu said the journey from Adenta to Accra, which previously took about two and a half hours during peak morning traffic, had been reduced to 23 minutes under the contra-flow arrangement.

He said the journey time increased slightly in the evening because of heavier traffic but remained significantly shorter than the duration commuters previously endured.

“Adenta to Accra, two and a half hours would have been the ideal time to travel in the morning but we did 23 minutes under the contra-flow. In the evening, we did 28 minutes because of the pressure.

“Kasoa to Accra used to take three hours but we are doing 50 minutes under contra-flow. Amasaman used to be between two and a half hours and three hours but we are doing between 28 and 32 minutes depending on the traffic on a particular day.”

The contra-flow system was launched on September 29, 2026, as part of efforts to address persistent traffic congestion on major roads connecting rapidly growing residential communities to central Accra.

The arrangement targets commuters travelling from areas including Adenta, Pokuase, Amasaman and Kasoa, where heavy traffic during morning and evening rush hours has long been a challenge for motorists and public transport users.
