The development follows a dispute over the legitimacy of his purported installation as Adumasahene, with the Juaben Traditional Council declaring the enstoolment unlawful.
A lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr. Cosmos Asante, has reportedly been arrested over allegations that he posed as the Adumasahene and Mawerehene of Juaben in the Ashanti Region.
The alleged impersonation has drawn attention to an ongoing traditional leadership dispute in the Juaben Traditional Area, particularly concerning the legitimacy of Dr. Asante’s purported installation as Adumasahene.
In a related development, the Juaben Traditional Council has publicly rejected his purported enstoolment, describing it as unlawful and without effect. In a statement dated October 14, 2026, the Council said the installation reportedly took place on October 13, 2026, through the Aduana Clan of Adumasa.
According to the Council, the process did not comply with the customary practices governing the installation of a chief within the Juaben Traditional Area.
The Council further maintained that Nana Kwabena Konadu-Yiadom is the duly recognised Adumasahene, having sworn the oath of allegiance to the Juaben Omanhene and his elders on August 17, 2026, and subsequently performed the customary aseda on September 15, 2026.
The traditional authority also recounted that the dispute over the Adumasa Stool followed the death of the previous chief, Nana Yaw Oppong III, in October 2024. A committee appointed to examine the matter reportedly concluded that the stool belonged exclusively to the Oyoko Clan.
The Council subsequently cautioned the public against recognising or dealing with Dr. Asante as Adumasahene, maintaining that his claim contravened established customary norms and practices.
While the reported arrest adds another dimension to the controversy, details concerning the circumstances of the arrest, the specific charges, and the status of any police investigation have yet to be independently established for this report.
The matter raises broader questions about the recognition of traditional authorities, the role of customary law in chieftaincy disputes, and the importance of following established procedures for the installation of chiefs.
As the situation develops, further clarification from the Ghana Police Service, KNUST, and Dr. Asante or his representatives would be necessary to establish the full facts surrounding the reported arrest and the allegations against him.
It is important to emphasise that allegations of impersonation do not, by themselves, establish guilt. Dr. Asante is entitled to the presumption of innocence unless and until a competent court determines otherwise.
