Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, was sighted at the Accra High Court on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, under tight security.
Chairman Wontumi, who is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence, appeared before the court in connection with his ongoing trial in the Ghana Export-Import (EXIM) Bank fraud case.
A video from the court showed the former NPP regional chairman arriving in a convoy of vehicles accompanied by heavily armed officers of the Ghana Prisons Service.
He was seen sitting between two officers in a silver pick-up truck.
The vehicle was preceded by at least one other pick-up truck occupied by heavily armed security personnel.
Wontumi’s court appearance, comes amid speculations about the state of his health at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison, where he is serving his sentence.
About the EXIM Bank case:
Chairman Wontumi is also serving a 20-year prison sentence following his conviction in an illegal mining-related case involving activities at his Samreboi concession.
The EXIM Bank case centres on an alleged fraudulent GH¢30 million loan facility obtained in 2018 to finance a proposed farming project by Wontumi Farms Limited.
Chairman Wontumi is standing trial alongside Wontumi Farms Limited and his associate, Thomas Antwi Boasiako, who is reportedly at large.
The prosecution alleges that the facility was secured through false pretences and forged or altered documents.
Chairman Wontumi faces five charges: defrauding by false pretences, two counts of uttering forged documents, money laundering, and intentionally causing financial loss of GH¢30 million to a public body.
The prosecution further alleges that the proposed farming activities were not undertaken, the required agricultural machinery was not purchased, and workers were not employed as represented to the bank.
It also alleges that funds withdrawn from Wontumi Farms Limited’s accounts were used for personal purposes and investments in other businesses.
The former NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman has denied all five charges and pleaded not guilty.
