President John Dramani Mahama says he will seek to convince Russian President Vladimir Putin to agree to a ceasefire in the war in Ukraine when he travels to Russia for the Russia–Africa Summit.

He made the remarks during an interview at the Financial Times Africa Summit in London while discussing Russia’s military involvement in the Sahel and the need for international cooperation in the fight against terrorism.

When asked about Russian military units supporting some governments in the Sahel, the President responded that countries should be free to receive assistance from any partner committed to combating terrorism.

“My opinion is that anybody who is committed to the fight against terrorism is welcome,” he said.

He cited Ghana’s security cooperation with the United Kingdom, Germany, France and the United States, noting that the country shares intelligence and conducts joint training with these partners.

The President subsequently highlighted Ghana’s non-alignment policy, stressing that the country maintains friendly relations with global powers, including Russia.

“We are friends to all and enemies to none,” he said.

It was in this context that President Mahama disclosed his intention to use his planned visit to Russia to engage with its leader to encourage a ceasefire in Ukraine.

“Indeed, I’m going to Russia for the Russia-Africa summit and try to convince President Putin to have a ceasefire if I can,” he said.

The Russia-Ukraine war began in February 2022 when Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The conflict has since caused widespread destruction and loss of life, with diplomatic efforts yet to produce an end to the fighting.

As of October 2026, diplomatic efforts to secure a ceasefire are continuing, with Ukraine expressing support for a ceasefire and further talks. However, negotiations with Russia remain complicated by disagreements over the terms of a settlement.
