The Vice-Chancellors of Technical Universities of Ghana (VCTU-G) have appealed to the Technical Universities Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG) to immediately call off its ongoing strike to allow teaching and learning to resume.
The strike, which began on October 1, 2026, has halted academic activities across the country’s technical universities, raising concerns about students’ welfare and the timely completion of academic calendars.
In a statement issued on Friday, October 23, VCTU-G said it recognised the grievances raised by TUTAG but stressed the need to balance staff concerns with the interests of students and the stability of academic programmes.
The appeal follows an engagement between the leadership of VCTU-G and TUTAG on Thursday, October 22, during which the vice-chancellors urged the union to suspend the industrial action and pursue its outstanding concerns through dialogue and the appropriate institutional and administrative channels.
According to VCTU-G, technical universities have made considerable efforts to restore and stabilise their academic calendars following previous disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
It warned that another prolonged interruption could worsen the challenges facing students and university managements, with consequences that could take considerable time to resolve.
The vice-chancellors also called on the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Finance and the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to facilitate an early resolution of the outstanding issues through constructive engagement with the union.
VCTU-G said addressing staff concerns through established labour relations mechanisms was important, but must be balanced against the need to sustain academic activities, protect students’ welfare and preserve the integrity of academic calendars.
The statement expressed hope that renewed engagement among all relevant stakeholders would lead to a timely, mutually acceptable and sustainable resolution, allowing teaching and learning to resume without further delay.
