Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu is scheduled to meet the leadership of teacher unions on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, to address outstanding validation issues delaying the payment of promotion salary arrears to about 28,000 teachers.
The meeting is expected to find a way forward for the affected teachers, some of whom are yet to complete the validation process required to receive their payments.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, the minister said he had invited the unions to an emergency meeting to resolve the outstanding concerns.
“I am compelled to invite the teacher unions to an emergency meeting this morning. I have reached out to them,” he said.
Iddrisu urged the teachers not to resume their strike, assuring them that the government was committed to resolving the matter through discussions with their leadership.
He disclosed that the government had paid the promotion salary arrears of 52,000 teachers who had completed the validation process.
“The 52,000 promotion arrears on the new grade were honoured by the government and paid by the government by October 16. What is outstanding is around 28,000, which includes some non-teachers; they may not be able to get payment because the validation process has not been completed,” he explained.
According to the minister, the outstanding payments could be processed again, with the government targeting payment by mid-November or the end of November.
He also indicated that the government could consider making a supplementary allocation for October to facilitate payments to those who are yet to receive their arrears.
The latest engagement follows the suspension of industrial action by teachers over delays in the payment of their promotion salary arrears.
The outcome of the meeting is expected to determine the next steps towards resolving the validation challenges and ensuring that eligible teachers receive their outstanding payments.
