The interdicted headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), Zakaria Abdulai, has been arrested as police investigate allegations of sexual misconduct involving female students.

Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak disclosed the arrest while appearing before Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.

He said the case had been transferred from the Ashanti Regional Police Command to Police Headquarters in Accra for further investigation.

According to the Minister, the matter came to his attention on September 7, when a report was submitted to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID). He said he subsequently insisted that the case be moved to the national headquarters.

Mr Muntaka revealed that investigators were pursuing the legal procedures required to obtain a DNA sample from the headmaster for testing against semen reportedly recovered from a dress belonging to one of the alleged victims.

He explained that the police needed court authorisation to obtain the sample and that the process was underway.

The Minister added that Zakaria Abdulai had been arrested and had given a statement to the police, stressing that the investigation would proceed in accordance with due process.

Meanwhile, Mr Abdulai has vowed to pursue all lawful avenues to clear his name.

He expressed hope that once the matter was resolved, he would return to active political engagement and continue contributing to the ideals and aspirations of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Mr Abdulai, who is also the incumbent NDC Secretary for the Juaben Constituency, has resigned from the position and withdrawn his candidature for the constituency chairmanship election.

He remains interdicted as headmaster of Obuasi SHTS as investigations into the allegations continue.
