Aspiring National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Akwasi Opong-Fosu, has commended the Mahama administration for its efforts to stabilise Ghana’s economy and accelerate industrialisation.
Speaking to Umaru Sanda Amadu on Channel One TV’s Face to Face on Tuesday, October 27, Mr Opong-Fosu described the government’s economic performance so far as positive, citing progress in economic stabilisation and the launch of an industrialisation drive.
“So it’s good we have a government that has managed, within this short period, to stabilise the economy and has also launched a rapid industrialisation drive for growth. These are positive,” he said.
He also cited investor confidence as another positive sign, drawing on his interactions with investors in his capacity as chair of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) Boad.
Mr Opong-Fosu said the NDC needed to adjust its approach following its transition from opposition to government, arguing that the party now had a responsibility to support the administration’s development agenda while ensuring accountability.
“We have moved from a party in opposition to a party in government. That’s huge. The approach and the tools whilst you are in opposition will be different from when you are in government,” he said.
He said the party must serve as a strong pillar behind the government, helping it fulfil its promises while scrutinising its actions and decisions.
“The responsibility here is that the party becomes a strong pillar behind the government, supporting the government in its delivery as well as holding the government in terms of accountability,” he said.
Mr Opong-Fosu’s comments come as the NDC continues to navigate the demands of governing while maintaining party cohesion and ensuring that the administration remains accountable to the public.
