The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has raised Ghana’s economic growth forecast for 2026 to 5.7% from 4.6%.

The revised outlook, contained in the Fund’s October 2026 World Economic Outlook, points to stronger growth prospects and a continued moderation in price pressures.

However, Ghana’s ability to sustain the recovery will depend on fiscal discipline, export diversification and the resilience of domestic economic activity.

The projections were released on October 13, on the sidelines of the IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings in Bangkok, Thailand.

The revised growth forecast represents an upward adjustment of 1.1 percentage points from the IMF’s April projection.

It is also above the government’s 4.8% growth target outlined in the 2026 Budget.

The Fund expects growth to moderate to 5.2% in 2027, suggesting that the pace of expansion could ease after this year’s stronger performance.

    Inflation to ease to 4.8%

The IMF has also lowered its year-end inflation forecast for Ghana to 4.8%, from its April projection of 7.9%.

The revised forecast is below the Bank of Ghana’s medium-term inflation target of 8%, with a tolerance band of two percentage points on either side.

With inflation standing at 5.2% in September, the projection points to a further easing of price pressures before the end of the year.

It would also extend Ghana’s run of single-digit year-end inflation for a second consecutive year, following a similar outcome in 2025.

Lower inflation could help protect household purchasing power and give businesses greater certainty in planning their operations.

However, the broader benefits will depend on whether the decline in inflation translates into sustained price stability and improved real incomes.

    Context

The improved outlook reflects Ghana’s fiscal consolidation efforts, targeted spending to support economic activity and strong commodity export earnings, particularly from gold.

Higher gold export earnings have supported the trade balance and helped strengthen the country’s external position.

However, reliance on commodity exports leaves the economy exposed to fluctuations in international prices.

The Fund has therefore urged Ghana to diversify its export base to reduce its vulnerability to external shocks and establish a more resilient foundation for long-term growth.

Data from the Ghana Statistical Service show that the economy expanded by 6.0% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026.

Growth for the first half of the year reached 6.2%, providing further evidence of sustained economic activity.

    Global economic risks

Ghana’s outlook comes against a challenging international backdrop.

The IMF projects global economic growth of 3.1% in 2026, rising to 3.4% in 2027. It expects global headline inflation to reach 4.7% this year before easing to 4.1% in 2027.

The Fund has warned that geopolitical conflicts, renewed trade tensions, high public debt and uncertainty surrounding investment in artificial intelligence could weigh on global activity.
