The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has referred allegations of sexual misconduct involving the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School and female students to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for investigation.
Speaking to Citi News’ Akosua Otchere on Monday, October 19, the Minister said the referral would allow the police to investigate the criminal aspects of the allegations, while the education authorities examine the matter administratively.
He also confirmed that the headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai, had been interdicted pending investigations, stressing that the government would not tolerate sexual misconduct in schools.
The Minister further disclosed that the government was considering broader measures to address indiscipline in schools, including the development of stronger regulations to guide the conduct of students and teachers.
“Any act of sexual misconduct involving a teacher and a student amounts to abuse of office, and government takes strong exception to it. We have forwarded it to the criminal investigation department to deal with the criminal aspects of it whilst I’ve asked for the suspension of the headmaster without prejudice whilst we look into the merits of the case,” he said.
According to him, a committee would soon be established to advise the government on the issue, adding that he supported making the Ghana Education Service’s code of conduct and standards legally binding under Article 11 of the 1992 Constitution.
The Ghana Education Service announced the headmaster’s interdiction in a statement issued on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, to facilitate investigations into the allegations.
The case reportedly sparked a student rampage at the school, during which school property was destroyed, leading to the temporary closure of the institution.
