The Forestry Commission (FC) has announced a GH¢50,000 reward for credible information leading to the arrest and prosecution of a suspected poacher who allegedly shot and killed a senior ranger at the Kakum Conservation Area in the Central Region.
Nana Richard Otwey, 59, was killed during a routine forest patrol and anti-poaching operation on Saturday, August 22, 2026.
He was leading a team of four Wildlife Resource Guards on a three-day patrol at Briscoe 2 Camp near the Kruwa Community when the incident occurred.
According to the Commission, the patrol identified two suspected poachers, John Mensah and Bukari Abudu, both residents of Assin Betwease in the Assin South District.
The team apprehended Mensah, but Abudu, who allegedly fired the fatal shot, escaped and remains at large.
The Commission announced the reward on its social media page on October 27, 2026, while it paid its last respects to the late ranger at his burial and funeral rites in Abrafo-Odumase in the Central Region.
In honour of his service, the Commission has erected a bust in front of the administration office of Kakum National Park.
The Chief Executive of the Forestry Commission, Dr Hugh C A Brown, praised Nana Otwey for his dedication to duty and commitment to protecting Ghana’s natural heritage.
