A devastating fire outbreak has destroyed more than 20 container shops at Kasoa High Tension in the Awutu Senya East Municipality of the Central Region, leaving several traders counting their losses after their goods and business investments were reduced to ashes.

The incident, reported on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, is estimated to have caused losses running into millions of Ghana cedis. The affected traders now face the difficult task of rebuilding their businesses and restoring their sources of income.

According to reports, the fire swept through the shops, destroying merchandise and other valuable items belonging to the business owners. The incident has also raised concerns about the readiness of emergency services to respond to fire outbreaks in the area.

    How the Fire Started

Eyewitnesses reportedly noticed smoke coming from one of the shops and immediately contacted the Kasoa Fire Service for assistance.

However, they alleged that they were informed that the fire tender at the Kasoa station was out of service. They further claimed that a call to the Buduburam Fire Service produced a similar response, leaving them to wait for assistance from the Weija Fire Service.

The reported difficulties in securing firefighting assistance have raised questions about the availability of functional equipment at the stations serving the area.

The exact cause of the fire has not yet been established in the available report. Further investigations will be needed to determine what triggered the blaze and the circumstances surrounding its spread.

    Traders Face Significant Financial Losses

The destruction of more than 20 container shops represents a major setback for the affected business owners, many of whom depend on their daily sales to support themselves and their families.

For small-scale traders, losing an entire shop and its contents can wipe out years of savings and investment. Some may also face outstanding debts to suppliers or lenders, making it more difficult to resume operations.

Although the full extent of the damage has not been independently established, the reported losses running into millions of Ghana cedis highlight the economic impact of the disaster.

The fire could also affect other people who depend on the shops, including suppliers and workers whose incomes are linked to the businesses.

The traders will now need to replace their destroyed goods, find suitable trading spaces and raise the capital required to reopen. Financial assistance and access to temporary business locations could help ease the pressure on those who have lost their investments.

Assembly Member Calls for Urgent Intervention

Shadrach Boakyi Yiadom, the Assembly Member for the Kasoa American Town Electoral Area, has reportedly called on President John Dramani Mahama and the Minister for the Interior to urgently provide the Kasoa Fire Service with the equipment and resources needed to respond effectively to emergencies.

His appeal comes amid concerns about the alleged difficulties encountered by residents who sought firefighting assistance during the incident.

Functional fire tenders and adequately equipped emergency teams are essential to controlling fires before they spread to neighbouring properties. This is particularly important in busy commercial areas where shops are close together and contain large quantities of merchandise.

The relevant authorities are expected to clarify the allegations concerning the availability of firefighting equipment at the Kasoa and Buduburam stations. Such clarification would help establish whether equipment shortages or other operational challenges affected the response.

    Renewed Concerns Over Fire Safety

The incident has highlighted the risks facing businesses operating in densely populated commercial areas and the need for stronger fire prevention measures.

Traders can reduce potential hazards by maintaining safe electrical installations, avoiding overloaded sockets, storing flammable materials properly and keeping access routes clear for emergency responders. Where appropriate, shops should also have suitable fire extinguishers and workers who understand how to use them safely.

However, effective prevention must be supported by properly maintained firefighting equipment, emergency preparedness and coordination among the services responsible for protecting lives and property.

Authorities may also need to review fire safety arrangements in the area to identify potential hazards and address any weaknesses that could increase the risk of similar incidents.

Traders Hope for Support and Recovery

As affected traders assess their losses, support from government agencies, local authorities, business associations and charitable organisations could help them rebuild their businesses.

Assistance could include financial relief, temporary trading spaces and help replacing essential goods and equipment. A comprehensive damage assessment would also help determine the scale of support required.

Beyond recovery efforts, the incident has underscored the importance of investigating the cause of the fire and clarifying the reported challenges in securing firefighting assistance.

For now, the traders face an uncertain future after losing merchandise and business investments they may have spent years building. Their recovery will depend partly on their ability to raise fresh capital and access support.

The fire at Kasoa High Tension serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences fire outbreaks can have on small businesses. It also highlights the need for effective fire prevention, functional emergency equipment and a dependable response system to protect businesses and livelihoods.
