The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced plans to commence a nationwide meter audit exercise aimed at reducing commercial losses, improving revenue assurance and combating electricity theft.
The exercise will cover all ECG operational areas and involve the inspection and verification of prepaid and postpaid meters, Special Load Tariff (SLT) installations and associated wiring.
According to ECG, the exercise is intended to verify the integrity of metering systems and ensure accurate measurement and billing of electricity consumption.
In a public announcement, the company said the notice serves as official notification of the exercise, adding that no further prior notices, appointment letters or advance notifications would be issued.
It has therefore urged customers, landlords, estate managers, property managers, facility managers and security personnel not to deny, restrict or delay access to authorised ECG personnel on the grounds that they have not received separate notification letters.
ECG cited Regulation 4(h) of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (Customer Service) Regulations, 2020 (L.I. 2413), which requires consumers to grant utility employees or their agents safe and reasonable access to their premises to read meters or inspect utility equipment, subject to the production of verifiable identification and compliance with the utility’s customer charter.
The company assured the public that all employees and authorised agents participating in the exercise would carry official ECG identification cards.
It has, however, encouraged customers to verify the identities of field personnel before granting them access to their premises.
Customers can confirm the identity of ECG personnel by calling the company’s customer service centre on 0302 611 611 or using the *226# USSD verification service available on all mobile networks.
To use the USSD service, customers are required to dial *226#, select Option 5, labelled “Verify Staff”, and enter the six-digit verification code provided by the staff member.
The staff member’s full name, region and district will then be displayed for the customer to confirm against the details of the person seeking access.
The nationwide exercise forms part of the company’s broader efforts to strengthen electricity revenue collection and address losses associated with metering irregularities and illegal electricity connections.
