Burkina Faso has suspended beauty pageants nationwide while launching a national science competition aimed at recognising and nurturing female scientific talent, drawing attention to the country’s approach to cultural values and women’s participation in science.

In June 2026, authorities suspended beauty pageants pending the development of new regulations, citing the need to protect the country’s cultural identity, social values and human dignity, reports Afrika World.

Two months later, the Presidency launched HAKILI Mousso, a competition designed to identify, encourage and reward talented young women in science.

The competition brought together 84 young women to compete in mathematics, physics and chemistry. Top performers received prizes and scholarships, offering them recognition and potential support for their academic journeys.

President Ibrahim Traoré later met the winners, urging them to believe in their abilities, pursue careers in science and set ambitious goals for their future.

The initiative highlights an effort to give young women greater visibility in scientific fields, where access to educational opportunities, mentorship and professional support can play an important role in shaping future careers.

Recognising their achievements at a national level could also help challenge stereotypes about women’s capabilities in science and encourage more girls to explore subjects such as mathematics, technology and engineering.

However, a competition alone cannot guarantee lasting change. Sustained investment in girls’ education, access to quality science teaching, scholarships and career development opportunities will be essential to help more young women turn their potential into long-term achievement.

As Burkina Faso reshapes its approach to cultural expression and women’s participation in science, a key question remains: can initiatives such as HAKILI Mousso inspire more girls to pursue scientific studies and create meaningful pathways to higher education, research and employment?
