The Achimota Circuit Court has adjourned to November 24, 2026, for its final ruling in the case involving Sampson Azumah, who is accused of stabbing a firefighter during a fire outbreak at Adjiringanor in Accra.
Azumah appeared before the court on Monday, October 19, to continue his trial, during which he opted to file a witness statement and present his account of the incident. The prosecution subsequently cross-examined him on his testimony.
The case stems from an incident on November 14, 2025, when firefighters responded to a late-night blaze at an eight-room residential building near Ability Square at Adjiringanor.
According to the prosecution, the fire attracted several bystanders, some of whom allegedly pelted firefighters with stones as they worked to contain the blaze.
The prosecution told the court that the complainant, firefighter Leslie Adjei Tetteh, was folding the fire hose after the blaze had been brought under control when Azumah allegedly approached and accused him of deliberately splashing water on him.
Azumah allegedly pulled a screwdriver from a waist bag and stabbed the firefighter in the left arm before fleeing the scene.
A second firefighter was also injured when a block fell on his shoulder during the firefighting operation. Both officers were treated at Unity Clinic in Madina and later discharged.
Azumah was arrested on November 17, 2025, and charged with causing unlawful harm. He pleaded not guilty when he appeared before the court.
Following the latest proceedings, the Greater Accra Regional Fire Commander, Assistant Chief Fire Officer II Rashid Kwame Nisawu, reaffirmed the Ghana National Fire Service’s commitment to pursuing justice for the injured officer.
He also commended fire personnel who attended the court proceedings in solidarity with their colleague, expressing hope that the outcome would deter attacks on firefighters responding to emergencies.
The court is expected to deliver its final ruling on November 24.
