Ghanaian media personality and lawyer Serwaa Amihere has been dragged online for the past few days following comments she made that have gone viral on social media.
In a video making waves online, Serwaa Amihere was seen advising young ladies not to purchase fake designer bags if they cannot afford the original.
Following her statement, some female personalities have taken to social media to criticise her comments.
Efia Odo
In a video shared on X, socialite Efia Odo, who has weighed in on the conversation, questioned Serwaa Amihere over what problem she would have with an individual choosing to purchase a fake designer bag.
According to Efia Odo, it is time Ghanaians stopped judging people based on what they wear, adding that a person’s qualifications, rather than their attire, should be the yardstick for employment.
“I think what our sister wanted to say was, ‘Cut your coat according to your size.’ But if my size is to have a fake Birkin, what is her problem? And why should you not hire someone because they are wearing a fake Birkin?
“So you are now judging a person’s qualifications based on what they are wearing? That makes no sense. The biggest problem we have in Ghana is that we judge a person if he or she has money before the person is respected,” she said.
Efia Odo further noted that most jobs in Accra do not pay well and argued that someone who can afford an original designer bag may not necessarily need to seek employment in Accra.
“If someone can afford an original Dior bag, I don’t think such a person would want to look for a job in Accra because these jobs can’t pay $5,000. I think the conversation should be centred around how these young people should look decent,” she added.
Mzbel
Aside from Efia Odo, musician Mzbel has also shared her thoughts on the comments made by Serwaa Amihere.
In a video shared online, Mzbel noted that people should not be judged based on the material possessions they wear or carry.
According to her, many people in the country use fake designer items.
“Fake is fake; it doesn’t matter how expensive it is. If it is fake, it is fake. Fake BBL, nails, wigs, bags, and even buttocks. Opinions shouldn’t be formed about you based on the kind of bag you are holding.
“Most of the things we wear are all fake. Even the nails and eyelashes we wear are all fake,” Mzbel said.
Afia Schwarzenegger
Socialite Afia Schwarzenegger has also lambasted Serwaa Amihere following the journalist’s comments.
The socialite shared an old conversation from 2021 on social media in which Serwaa Amihere was allegedly seen purchasing fake jewellery.
According to Afia Schwarzenegger, Serwaa Amihere’s comment was unwarranted because she was once in the position of the young ladies she is now criticising for wearing fake designer items.
Afia Schwarzenegger further stated that Serwaa Amihere should speak like a learned personality rather than making what she considers inappropriate comments when given the opportunity to speak on public platforms.
“Serwaa, the statement you made against Aka Ebenezer’s chains is not important because this is a conversation with you in 2021, and you were buying coppers while some of us are wearing gold.
“The statement you made was so uncalled for. The copper chains are someone’s business, and it’s not everyone who can afford the original chain. So when you are given an opportunity to talk, speak like a lawyer. Don’t talk anyhow and rubbish people. Since when did you start buying original to look down upon others?” Afia noted.
