The Adenta-Abokobi Divisional Police Command is investigating a shooting incident involving a police officer at Ritz Junction that left two people with gunshot wounds.

The incident occurred on Sunday, October 11, following a confrontation between General Sergeant Mathew Aboase, who is stationed at the Madina Police Station, and some drivers of the Ritz Junction Taxi Drivers Union.

According to preliminary investigations by the Police, the confrontation escalated after the officer allegedly threatened the drivers with his pistol, prompting them to attempt to disarm him.

During the ensuing struggle, the weapon reportedly discharged accidentally, hitting two people who were nearby.

The two victims, identified as Doe Asinyo and 34-year-old Gifty Nyimahen, sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to the Madina Pentecost Hospital for medical attention.

Asinyo sustained a gunshot wound to the left thigh. He was treated at the hospital and subsequently discharged.

Nyimahen, who suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen, was admitted for treatment before being referred to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for further medical care.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting are being investigated by the Adenta-Abokobi Divisional Police Command.

The Police subsequently arrested General Sergeant Aboase in connection with the incident. He is currently in police custody pending further investigations.

The officer’s service pistol has also been retained by the Police as evidence to support the investigation into the circumstances that led to the shooting.
