Two Ghanaian twin brothers and a US-based Ghanaian woman have pleaded guilty to charges levelled against them for their involvement in an international criminal network that defrauded American citizens, mostly older women.

According to an unsealed document released on October 26 by the US Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio, the two Ghanaians, identified as Jamal Abubakari, aka Jamal Abubakar, aka Arrangement, 22, and Kamal Abubakari, aka Kamal Abubakar, aka Lancaster, 22, pleaded guilty on October 13, 2026.

The document, sighted by GhanaWeb, also indicated that Lancaster and Arrangement’s co-conspirator, Amanda Joy Opoku-Boachie, also known as Amanda Joy Kessie Bierman, 53, of Kula, Hawaii, pleaded guilty on October 20, 2026.

“All three defendants recently pleaded guilty to Conspiracy to Commit Wire Fraud. Jamal Abubakari, aka Jamal Abubakar, aka Arrangement, 22, and Kamal Abubakari, aka Kamal Abubakar, aka Lancaster, 22, pleaded guilty Oct. 13. Co-conspirator Amanda Joy Opoku-Boachie, aka Amanda Joy Glum, aka Amanda Joy Kessei Bierman, 53, of Kula, Hawaii, pleaded guilty Oct. 20, 2026,” the document read.

The document further detailed that Lancaster, Arrangement and their third co-conspirator, as part of their plea in connection with the romance scam through which they defrauded older American citizens of about $9 million, have also agreed to forfeit jewellery seized at the time of their arrest.

Per the document, the jewellery included luxury timepieces, as well as high-end watches, rings, chains, medallions and earrings.

“As part of the plea, the Abubakaris and Opoku-Boachie agreed to forfeit jewelry which investigators seized at the time of their arrests, including luxury timepieces, as well as high-end watches, rings, chains, medallions, and earrings.”

The document also stated that the three individuals are likely to face a maximum jail term of 20 years.

It added that Lancaster and Arrangement will be sentenced on February 9, 2027, while Opoku-Boachie is scheduled to be sentenced on February 10, 2027.

“The defendants each face a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

“Sentencing for the Abubakari brothers is scheduled for Feb. 9, 2027. Opoku-Boachie is scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 10, 2027,” it added.

    Background

Lancaster and Arrangement were picked up by the FBI in May 2026, shortly after arriving in the United States.

According to allegations in court documents, from about July 2024 to April 2026, the defendants targeted older Americans on dating websites and social media platforms as part of romance fraud schemes.

The defendants allegedly conspired with others to use fake personas to establish close, personal relationships with the victims, which were often romantic in nature.

After being misled by false stories, the victims sent money via wire transfers to financial accounts controlled by members of the conspiracy.

Portions of the funds were then provided to co-conspirators in Ghana and elsewhere. It also detailed that the victims collectively lost more than $9 million.
