The President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Jacob Anaba, has revealed that 38 teachers at Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS) were asked to leave the school after speaking against its headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai, amid allegations of sexual abuse involving female students.

He said the development raised serious questions about how complaints against the headmaster had been handled and why teachers who allegedly spoke out were asked to leave the school.

Mr Anaba made the claims on Joy News’ PM Express, following a report by JoyNews investigative correspondent Manasseh Azure Awuni into claims of sexual abuse involving atleast 14 students at the school.

Mr Anaba said reports about the alleged abuse dated back to 2025, with students and parents raising concerns before the matter gained wider public attention in August 2026.

“As I speak to you, 38 teachers were being asked to leave the school. What was the reason?” he asked.

Mr Anaba alleged that the directive followed the work of a fact-finding committee chaired by the district director of education, who, he said, had instructed the assistant headmaster to communicate the decision to the teachers.

    Calls for accountability

Mr Anaba said complaints about the alleged abuse had been raised before the issue became public, arguing that the concerns should have prompted an earlier response from the authorities.

He said students’ anger had helped bring the matter into the public domain, despite earlier complaints from students and parents.

“It was a wrath of the students that brought this thing into the public domain. It happened earlier before that. It happened earlier before that,” he said.

He also questioned the response of officials, including the district director, whom he said knew about the complaints.

“He knew about it. What measures did he take? He never. He allowed this thing to happen,” Mr Anaba alleged.

He urged the authorities to ensure that the allegations were properly investigated and that no one found culpable was protected because of their position.

“You see, this Ghana belongs to all of us. We have to protect the Ghana that we all belong to,” he said.

“So, if a member of us, a teacher, does the wrong thing, he must be taken through the due course of the law. No one should be shielded. No one,” he demanded.

Headmaster must leave, NAGRAT president says

Mr Anaba also called for decisive action against the headmaster, arguing that allegations of such gravity were incompatible with the responsibility teachers owed their students.

He said the school head should not be allowed to continue in the profession if the allegations were established.

“This man should leave immediately. He can’t be a teacher again, because the profession that we decide to belong to is a noble one,” he said.

He added that teachers occupied a position of trust and responsibility in their relationships with students.

“You have a fiduciary relationship with the student that you are handling. We may make mistakes, but not this type of mistake,” he said.

The headmaster has reportedly been interdicted and suspended following the latest revelations. The allegations against him remain subject to investigation, and any disciplinary or criminal findings must follow the appropriate procedures.
