The Minority Caucus in Parliament has threatened to initiate a vote of censure against Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa over an alleged scandal involving the South Africa evacuation exercise carried out some months ago.
The caucus said the move is necessary to ensure accountability and uphold the integrity of public office.
It added that it would consider starting proceedings under Article 82 of the Constitution and Order 138 of the Standing Orders of Parliament if the Minister remains in office.
“Should the minister remain in office, the minority in Parliament will consider initiating the parliamentary process for a vote of censure under Article 82 of the Constitution and Order 138 of the Standing Orders of Parliament against the Minister,” the caucus stated.
Under Article 82 of the Constitution, a censure motion against a minister needs the support of at least two-thirds of all Members of Parliament to pass.
If it does, the President must revoke the minister’s appointment unless the minister resigns first.
